Melissa Prorok, long-time principal of Pioneer Middle School, died Jan. 3, at the age of 63.
Ms. Prorok lost her long battle with cancer. She died at home surrounded by her family, including sons Ethan and Aidan and her partner, Kristy.
A former colleague, Robert Coniglio, called Ms. Prorok "one of the finest educators I have ever worked with." Charles Rinaldi, former Pioneer School District interim superintendent, said it was "a terrible loss. She was the real deal."
Ms. Prorok came to Pioneer in 2007 as an assistant middle school principal. She was appointed principal in 2012.
Pioneer Superintendent Nicholas Silvaroli said, "Personable, compassionate, and genuine, Melissa had a big heart. She LOVED people, especially her staff and students, and many will feel the impact of her loss.
"Melissa fought her illness for many months and always remained optimistic that she would return to Pioneer. She loved and missed her Pioneer family," he added.
The district offered support to staff and students in helping to process their grief. Heading up the efforts were Arcade Elementary Principal Kerry Slocum, who worked alongside Ms. Prorok as an assistant principal for many years, and current Acting Middle School Principal Richard Spinnelli.
