Pioneer has been advised of a Sept. 18 forum to address New York's graduation measures.
New York State's Blue Ribbon Commission on Graduation Measures was established in November 2019 to review and recommend changes to the state's high school diploma requirements.
The commission's work was driven by the need to address disparities in educational outcomes, ensure equity, and provide multiple pathways for students to demonstrate their readiness for graduation. The traditional reliance on standardized testing, particularly the Regents Exams, was scrutinized, with the recognition that a one-size-fits-all approach might not serve all students well, particularly those from marginalized communities.
The commission's recommendations, expected to lead to significant changes in diploma requirements, focus on a more holistic approach to assessing student readiness. The commission's work reflects a broader shift in education towards personalized learning and equity.
The public is invited to attend to hear these recommendations and provide feedback. "We know that some of you are parents and caregivers to students, may be educators, or community members who are interested in the education of students in New York. Your voice and perspective are valued in these conversations, and we invite you to participate," officials said.
Cattaraugus-Allegany BOCES will be hosting a public forum to review NYS Blue Ribbon Commission Recommendations. This session will be held Wednesday, September 18, from 11:15am - 3:00pm. In person at the CA BOCES CTE Center in Olean, or via Zoom.
This forum is open to parents and families, community members, students, and educators. When registering, please indicate your attendance preference (in-person/Zoom).
A Zoom-only session happens Sept. 19 from 6-8PM.
