As part of the 2022 Capital Improvement Project, Pioneer High School is currently undergoing replacement of a pair of traditional bathrooms with individual, private toilet rooms.

Superintendent Nicholas Silvaroli stressed that these are not coed bathrooms. “We are replacing two large ‘Traditional-style’ bathrooms with 14 individual toilet rooms that will be accessed directly from the hallway. This bathroom redesign was in part driven in response to recent New York State laws that impact use of bathroom facilities and concerns over privacy,” he said.

Mr, Silvaroli said the new design will provide privacy for all students. “We are constructing a horseshoe-shaped hallway, off of which will be 14 individual private toilet rooms. A hand-washing station will be placed in the center of the hallway,” he added.

Officials said this newer style of bathroom is becoming more common in public places, and can be easier for staff to monitor with regard to incidents of vandalism and harassment.

The current capital project was approved by voters in May 2022 and has a zero local tax impact.
