Pioneer School District wants our students, staff and community to be ready for the winter season ahead.
Every year, our Buildings, Grounds and Maintenance Department works with First Student Transportation personnel and area municipal officials in preparation for anticipated inclement weather.
The following factors/questions are taken into consideration when making a decision to delay or close school:
- Short-range and long-range weather forecasts from the National Weather Service. Are conditions likely to deteriorate or improve throughout the day?
- Assessment of road conditions in consultation with town and village highway superintendents. What's happening weather-wise in Java may not be the same as Lime Lake.
- Travel advisories from area police agencies. Are the main highways open?
- Guidelines for cold weather safety from the New York State School Health Services Center. Is it safe for our walkers or our students waiting roadside for a bus in extreme weather and sub-zero wind chills?
- Ability of our First Student buses to operate in extreme cold and across the various types of terrain in our district.
Make sure to register through for automated calls from the school district by listing your contact phone number in PowerSchool. Information on closings/delays/cancellations will be posted on the Pioneer home page, and on social media.
Also monitor local TV and radio stations for weather alerts, and be sure to have up-to-date emergency contact information for your child. Have an emergency plan in place should students be dismissed early.
