Delevan Elementary Maintenance

Delevan Elementary School is over 98,000 square feet with 53 classrooms. The building opened in 1957. Delevan underwent a capital project in 1989 which brought about a large addition which included a new Library.
Brandon Stearns (Class of '95) has been with the district since 2012, and is the Head Custodian at Delevan. His staff consists of 1st shift Custodian Jesse Scripp (hired 2018). Custodian Matt Davidson ('90) was hired by Pioneer in 1997 and is the second shift supervisor.
The cleaners at the Delevan are supervised by Brandi Prichard. Brandi was Hired by Pioneer in 2021 to oversee the district cleaning operations. The Delevan Cleaning team includes Dave Andres ('82, hired 2014), Dawn Wentz (hired 2021), Cassidy DeLude (hired 2022) and Megan Golombek (hired 2023).
Brandon oversees the daily operations of the Delevan Elementary maintenance department. He and the other building custodians are experienced in multiple trades and are responsible for maintaining the physical heating and cooling plant as well as electrical, plumbing, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC), carpentry, masonry, painting, and other building system repairs and maintenance. Each of the cleaners are responsible for the cleaning and disinfection of 12 to 15 rooms each night. During the summer months every room in the school is emptied, deep cleaned, and the floors refinished.
In addition, Brandon and his staff help to coordinate and manage all the activities Delevan Elementary hosts throughout the school year including athletic practices, Music Department plays and concerts, and STEM night. Delevan also hosts a Fall Harvest Day, Holliday Gala and many other community events. The Delevan custodians are responsible for lawn care and landscaping at the building along with snow removal from the parking lots and sidewalks. During July and August, the custodial staff also hosts a summer work program for local area youths.
The Delevan physical heating and cooling plant consists of a hot and cold-water loop. Two gas fired boilers (4.3 million BTU’s each) heat the loop water during heating season. Delevan Elementary has a gas well on site that is utilized for running a natural gas fired chiller for cooling season. The chiller in conjunction with a cooling tower are used to provide chilled water for the cold-water loop in the summer months. The gas well is also utilized to run the hot water boilers during the fall and spring months. Four circulating pumps are used to circulate the heated or chilled water through the loop to the unit ventilators and air handlers.
Delevan has seven rooftop units and five air handling units that heat and cool as well as provide fresh air to the larger spaces such as the auditorium, gymnasium and main office. Delevan has 47-unit ventilators that provide fresh air as well as heating and cooling to the classrooms. The unit ventilators are wall mounted and provide an exchange of fresh ventilation air directly to the classroom. The ventilation air is delivered at a fixed rate based on the occupancy of the classroom. Unit ventilators are dedicated to the room which they are installed and do not exchange or recirculate air with other spaces. Exhaust fans and relief openings are utilized throughout the building to discharge the ventilation air and prevent over pressurization of the space.
There have been several Capital Project renovations over the years at Delevan. Most recently, the 2019 project included new boiler burners as well as a site renovation which featured new sidewalks with a snow melt system at the bus lane and main entrance, as well as a replacement/reconfiguration of the front parking lot. In addition, the project team has multiple capital projects planned for Delevan as a part of the long-term capital project plan.
The maintenance team works tirelessly and takes a lot of pride to ensure that Delevan Elementary is always a very clean, well-maintained building for students to learn and grow.
